72nd Street is changed forever-
72nd Street is changed forever – and that’s a good thing. Ralph Lauren unveiled his new refined and luxurious mansion this past week which will house his women’s collection. A stately four floor mansion replaces a low-slung, serve and quite spare ‘high tax- payer” style building (good riddance to that!). The new style is Beaux- Arts and is a throw-back to a small palace in France; with ornate wrought iron and perfect symmetry. The Indiana limestone that it is sheathed in, is a glorious butter color, only to be made better with the passage of time. 888 Madison is a wonderful compliment to Ralph’s other corner — the more gothic and masculine Rhinelander Mansion. The south west corner of 72nd and Madison has a storied past and count several “A” list residents and among its owners including a Bayard – Cutter, a Vanderbilt and a Tiffany. This most fitting reincarnation is collaboration between Weddle Gilmore and Thomas Huto of HS2 Architecture. The Friends of the Upper East Side Historic District were split in its opinion of its place on the UES- none the less – Landmarks Preservation Commission approved.
Go see for yourself, what do you think?
