Looking back at NYC
If you have ever walked around New York with me you know that I love to tell stories. Mostly about the the transition or revitalization of New York City’s commercial or blighted neighborhoods to their current luxury residential status. I like to describe everything from neighborhood architecture and landmarks to scents, and street vibe to a building as part of the reference to location. Many of you have not walked around the block with me but there is a great new way to see what I might have said.
The Museum of the City of New York recently uploaded hundreds of historical photos to their website. Collections can be searched by era, borough, keyword, or photographer. I gave it a try looking towards the roots of my Long Shore and Fishermen ancestors and looked up photographs of the Fulton Street Fish Market. One image that resonated with me was of fishmongers unloading their bounty as the Woolworth Building stands at attention in the early morning mist. I knew instantly I must have stood in that very spot 100 times was amazed by what I know now of the changed skyline. This is just one of many examples you will find while exploring this wonderful gift from the MCNY.
