Midtown Dance Party

Dance classes are an ideal workout for those who do not like working out. Instead of counting calories burned and competing to go faster or work harder, you can lose yourself while perfecting your movements in time to the music, all while enjoying the noncompetitive camaraderie of your fellow students. In Central Midtown you will find adult classes for just about every discipline of dance you can shake a leg at, from ballet to Bollywood, tango to foxtrot.

The list of teachers at Ballet Arts might prove intimidating: Agnes de Mille and Bronislava Nijinska were among the former instructors, and the current faculty includes alums of the New York City Ballet, the Metropolitan Opera Company, and the National Ballet of Canada. But along with sessions for professional dancers, the studio offers classes such as Very Beginner Ballet and the open-level Double Barre Class for amateurs. And despite its name, Ballet Arts also teaches hip-hop, Pilates, yoga, and theater dance.

Bollywood Axion Dance

An exercise in exuberance, the dance form seen in Bollywood films—the Hindi-language films of India—incorporates everything from belly dancing to jazz to Indian folk dancing. Bollywood Axion Dance’s beginner classes are open to all, with a new dance taught every month or so. The studio also teaches beginner and intermediate bhangra, a vigorous form of folk dancing from the Punjab area of India that incorporates kicks and leaps and is certain to get your heart thumping.

DanceSport

230 West 39th Street (between Seventh and Eighth Avenues)

No need to panic on the ballroom dance floor. DanceSport offers classes in a variety of popular dances, including salsa, samba, Argentine tango, waltzes, and the foxtrot. There are separate classes for beginners and for more-advanced dancers, as well as open-level sessions. What’s more, dance parties are held several nights a week. The Tuesday night Salsa and Merengue Party, open to all students regardless of which discipline they are studying, features DJs spinning a wide range of Latin beats. The Argentine Tango Party takes place on Wednesday nights, and the Thursday night Mixed Dance Party is exactly what it says: a chance for all students to enjoy the music and the moves of every type of dance taught at the studio.

Dardo Galletto Studios

151 West 46th Street (between Sixth and Seventh Avenues)

It takes two to tango, but it may take several more to teach a newbie how to master the elements of the dance form. A former member of Ballet Argentino, Dardo Galletto established this studio to spread the joys of Argentine tango, and he teaches many of the classes himself. A number of the classes are open to dancers (and wannabe dancers) of all levels.

Royal Scottish Country Dance Society

St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church Community Center, 109 East 50th Street (between Lexington and Park Avenues)

Kilts are not required to learn the joys of jigs, reels, and strathspeys (think jigs but slower). Unlike Scottish highland dancing, country dancing is meant to be performed not on a stage but on a dance floor. Separate classes for novices and experienced dancers are taught on Thursday evenings.

Salsa Classes NYC

520 Eighth Avenue (between West 36th and 37th Streets)

Even if you are more familiar with salsa on chips than salsa on the dance floor, you can learn the moves of this Latin dance form, which takes elements of mambo, rumba, and other disciplines to create a syncopated art all its own. Classes are offered for beginners and for intermediate and advanced dancers. Despite its name, Salsa Classes NYC also offers instruction in bachata, a slower-paced cousin of salsa.
