Brooklyn is one of the five boroughs of New York City. Its name comes from the Dutch town of Breukelen, and many of its original settlers were Dutch. Brooklyn's most famous symbol is the Brooklyn Bridge, which connects downtown Manhattan to its neighbor.
Brooklyn is on the western tip of Long Island and it was an independent and distinct city until its consolidation into New York in 1898. Today, Brooklyn is New York City's most populous borough, with 2.5 million residents. As Brooklyn residents like to remind Manhattanites, if the borough were still an independent city, it would be the fourth-largest city in the United States.

Brooklyn as a whole maintains a distinct culture from the rest of New York City. Individual neighborhoods also have a unique feel or architectural heritage, often with a particular ethnic group and culture that predominate. Many of the neighborhoods have their roots as small villages and towns from when the area was first settled. However, the traditional profiles of these neighborhoods has changed dramatically over the last decade, as new residents have moved from Manhattan and new amenities have been established. There is a thriving literary and arts scene, renowned restaurants and a pedestrian café culture in many areas.
