Chelsea is well-known for its teeming art scene, shops, restaurants and galleries. Part of its transformation over the last decade has been due to the area's architecture. Chelsea contains an eclectic mix of 19th century townhouses, high rise luxury residential buildings and old warehouses that have been converted into ultra trendy lofts and art galleries. Since the mid-1990s, Chelsea has become the undisputed center of the New York art scene, as an increasing number of art galleries moved from SoHo. There are more than 200 art galleries, showing contemporary and modern art of all disciplines.

The area is set to be further transformed by the High Line development. The old El, or elevated train that was built in the late 1800s, is in the process of becoming a cultural center and elevated public park. The project has generated a wealth of innovative, cutting-edge new building construction, with many new projects still being developed by many of the world's leading architects.
