East Village
Despite gentrification, the East Village still retains its edgy, hip feel. Full of trendy cafes, bars and boutiques, it is a culturally and economically diverse neighborhood. The home of Alphabet City (named for the four avenues A, B, C and D along the neighborhood's east side) this is the part of town where the fringe, outsider artists and performers have made a name for themselves. The beat generation, Hippies and the punk movement all settled in here. Once occupied by such families as the Stuyvesants, Astors, and Vanderbilts, the East Village's history is more commonly tied to the various immigrant populations that moved in afterwards. This wide ethnic history is showcased in the highly varied selection of cuisine found throughout its borders. Tenement buildings remain the defining architecture of the East Village, and many of them have been renovated into more upscale apartment complexes. Many luxury condominiums have been built in the area, with the attendant amenities. Busy, lively and full of color, the East Village is one of New York's most dynamic neighborhoods. |
