These neighborhoods have a more relaxed, suburban feel and offer little of the hustle and bustle of the heart of Manhattan. Traditionally a haven for artists, musicians and performers, this area has long offered buyers and renters lower real estate prices than the rest of the island. It is also a historically Hispanic neigborhood, with a dynamic mix of cultures evident in its cuisine. Washington Heights is bounded to the south by 155th Street and to the north by Fairview Avenue and runs from the Harlem River on the east to the Hudson River on the west. Inwood is the northern tip of the island- the area lying north of Fairview Avenue.

Fort Tryon Park is an extremely beautiful park, and features heather gardens filled with wildflowers and butterflies, an open lawn, a café, and The Cloisters, with its tremendous collection of medieval art. The Museum is housed in a building constructed in the 1930s in the style of medieval cloisters, chapels and halls. There are plenty of events held there year-round, including hay rides in the fall and bulb-planting in the spring. James Gordon Bennet Park, in the middle of the area, boasts the highest point in Manhattan and is draw for the neighborhood's dog-walkers and children.
