West Harlem
Harlem has long been famous as the epicenter of African American life and culture. The 1920s were a prosperous time for this neighborhood, giving birth to the Harlem Renaissance: a period when this area was a cultural hotspot for art, literature and music. Famous literary figures such as Langston Hughes and Ralph Ellison called Harlem their home. The New Harlem Renaissance has changed the face of this historic neighborhood considerably over the last ten years. New condominium buildings have been built alongside historic limestone and brownstone townhouses, carefully restored by their owners. New amenities cater to busy lives, and young people and families have made Harlem their home - a sign of this neighborhood's revitalization. Harlem's center is 125th Street, its main shopping, restaurant and entertainment thoroughfare, as well as the location of the famous Apollo Theatre. |
